Acrylic, oil, coloured pencil, and saree fabric on wooden panel
24x30in
2026

///

This piece started with the colour blue, and with the sadness that arrives when I look back at how fragmented my past feels.

The title works in two languages at once. Nil rong means blue colour in Bengali. Said out loud in English it sounds like nothing is wrong. Both readings are true, which is the closest thing I have to an honest description of myself — someone who can still feel ashamed of his past and also tell you, plainly, that he is okay now.

I used red saree fabric and tinted it blue rather than sourcing blue saree to begin with. Altering the cloth was the point. It lets me leave my own mark on a cultural symbol instead of only inheriting one.

This is another grid piece, pushed further into abstraction by a pink flower growing out of the figure. The mark making is the most expressive I have allowed myself — thick impasto oil laid down, then carved back into with coloured pencil.

The figure stays semi-representational on purpose. I am trying to paint a personality rather than a likeness, and a personality does not resolve into a single image.
