Oil pastel, oil, marker, coloured pencil, and holographic Yu-Gi-Oh cards on wooden panel
24x30in
2026
///
I have always worked like a remix artist. I take the things that move me and put my own spin on them. That comes out of years producing music and DJing, and it has worked its way into everything else I make.
This piece continues the holographic work and tunes it directly to the pop culture that raised me. I have always been caught by the uncanny overlaps in anime — how often the protagonist has orange or blonde hair and the antagonist has blue.
Charizard and WarGreymon, the two orange dragons of Pokémon and Digimon, were one of the first overlaps I ever noticed. This piece is for the kid who noticed, and who processed it deeply enough that it still shows up in the work I make now.
Cutting up holographic Yu-Gi-Oh cards blurs the reference until it becomes something else — a new creature assembled out of nostalgia rather than a picture of either dragon.
Coloured pencil worked with alcohol gave me a glowing warm wash across the whole panel. It made the thick oil pastel marks pop against the watery reds staining the wood underneath.
