This piece came out of my relationship with masculinity, and it is a love letter to Scarborough.
It was the first time I let the material decide the work before anything else. The saree came from my younger sister — a hand-me-up. She is years behind me in age, and the garment still carries more cultural knowledge than I do, purely through where it came from and how it is decorated.
I cut floral motifs out of that fabric, following the shapes already etched into it, and set the tiles at the intersections of the grid knowing paint would go over them. The texture never fully disappears, and that is the point. The past keeps surfacing in the present as insistently as the future does.
The columbine is the flower of Scarborough, the place I learned to call home. Rendering it pink was deliberate. Scarborough was refuge and it was also where I was an outcast for being the artist kid. The flower grows over the soil of everything I have tried to erase, and its pink declares itself over a dark, timid version of me underneath.
There is also text hidden in the surface. If you find it, it should do something to you in the moment you read it.

The work comes with a certificate of authenticity and currently sits in a white frame.
This is the only piece in the group painted on raw canvas rather than wood panel, which changes how it travels. Depending on your location, the canvas may need to be taken off the stretcher and rolled for shipping, then restretched and reframed by a framer near you. Where that applies, a $400 discount is taken off the price and the cost of restretching and reframing is the collector's responsibility.

At this time original artwork will only be shipped within Canada and the United States due to cost and logistic limitations. Original work is not subject to the free shipping policy. The rate at checkout is a base price, and any remainder will be sent as an invoice via email.
